GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety and high correctional standards, as well as a safe, supportive working environment for our employees.
The WWC Correctional Captain manages the security functions of a correctional facility, ensuring employee, inmate, visitor, and community safety and security. Provides direction and guidance to security staff. While ensuring the protection of staff and inmates in accordance with the Wyoming Department of Corrections' mission, policy, and procedure. Directly supervises Lieutenants and overall supervision of Security personnel.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
Conducts security audits of the facility and ensures that deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.
Investigates staff and inmate issues.
Responsible for performance appraisals on Lieutenant positions.
Responsible for promotional boards for Lieutenant positions.
Reviews disciplinary processes and recommends answers to inmate appeals for Warden.
Serves as part of inmate disciplinary hearing committee when needed.
Teaches in-service classes.
Assign staff to shift cards.
Serves as part of the Security Threat Group committee for the facility.
Ensures corrective action is completed on internal investigations.
As a Chief of Security, responsible for all security operations of a small to medium-sized prison.
Investigation Officer for the Facility.
Serve as Duty Officers for on-call incidents after hours.
Ensuring all security post orders are reviewed, updated, and submitted for approval yearly.
Serve as a Department Head and part of the Executive team for the facility.
Responsible for ensuring all security equipment is in stock and workable.
Responsible for the budget of the area such as equipment, training, and overtime for the security operation.
Responsible for supervising the coordination of all inmate transports.
Responsible for reviewing all segregation status inmate reviews to ensure investigations are completed timely and accurately and inmates are placed in appropriate placements.
Review all staff reports and forward corrective action recommendations to the Associate Warden.
Qualifications
PREFERENCES:
Preference may be given to candidates who hold a Bachelor's Degree, typically in Criminal Justice, plus 4-7 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Lieutenant.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of Department and institution-specific policies and procedures.
Knowledge of prisoner behaviors and principles of offender management.
Knowledge of concepts and contemporary practices in group management and control in correctional institutions.
Knowledge of supervisor/subordinate interactions.
Knowledge of work management; skill in leadership, planning, and staff utilization.
Knowledge of identifying safety and security problems.
Knowledge of current literature, principles, concepts, and practices in the Management of security and group control in Correctional Institutions.
Knowledge of principles and control, personnel management, administrative prerogatives, and responsibilities.
Knowledge of policies and procedures established for the work system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
Bachelor's Degree (typically in Criminal Justice)
Experience:
1-3 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Lieutenant
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.
OR
Education & Experience Substitution:
4-7 years of progressive work experience in Correctional Security with acquired knowledge at the level of a Correctional Lieutenant
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Correctional Officer Certification awarded by the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) Commission. Applicants not holding Wyoming POST certification must be awarded certification within 6 months of employment.
Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Lifting up to 50 pounds with assistance on an occasional basis
Walking on cement floors on a frequent basis
Walking up and down stairs on an occasional basis
Bending, squatting, and kneeling on a regular basis
Kicking the leg up to knee level on an occasional basis
Striking or punching with both arms on an occasional basis
Typing/Repetitive motion on a frequent basis
Seeing: the visual ability to perform an activity such as analyzing data and figures, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading.
Candidates must have the: ability to work extended shifts, holidays, and weekends.
