Reporting to the University Librarian and Dean of the Library, theDeputy University Librarian oversees the day-to-day operation of coreaspects of the library system and leads the programmatic and serviceportfolios in collections and research services. They deputize for theDean as required and ensure alignment of services with strategic goals.
This is a new role, subsuming the current portfolios of the AssociateUniversity Librarian (AUL) for Access & Collection Management with thatof the AUL for Research & Learning, to create a division aligned withthe emerging Library vision and strategy. With a focus on services andaccess to information, this vision situates the Library in a connectedand open global knowledge environment. We are looking for atransformative leader to work in close partnership with the Dean of theLibrary to ensure we meet the needs of a world-leading university in achanging environment.
As a member of the Library\'s Strategic Leadership Board (SLB), theDeputy leads core Library services, and deputizes for the Dean. Theportfolio for this position includes (in alphabetical order) thefollowing teams: Access Services, Area Studies, Collection Management,East Asia, Humanities, Instruction & Outreach, Preservation, Science,Social Science, Special Collections, and Technical Services, with atotal of 150 staff and additional student workers.
Responsibilities:
Leadership:
Work closely with the Dean and other leaders to develop and executeLibrary strategy.Oversee core elements of the Library operation and lead the Libraryin the absence of the Dean.Create a robust network of campus partnerships to advance and informLibrary strategies.Represent the Library within and beyond the campus, internally onrelevant committees and projects, externally in key partnershipssuch as the Big Ten Academic Alliance and IvyPlus LibrariesConfederation.Oversee budgets for the division, making equitable and strategicdecisions on resource allocation and investments.Set strategic division goals and form an effective and coordinateddivision with a welcoming, inclusive, collaborative, and innovativeworking culture aligned with Library goals.Oversee the campus libraries, with exception of the D\'Angelo LawLibrary.Collection Services:
Develop and implement a content strategy that emphasizes meetinguser needs and that firmly embeds the Library in consortialapproaches.Develop a long-term approach to collection storage for printmaterial, taking into account changing user needs and that theLibrary\'s storage facilities are already beyond capacity.Oversee the development of an engagement strategy to foster use ofspecial, distinctive, and archival collections on and beyond thecampus.Oversee the Library\'s acquisitions budget with a focus on value formoney for our users and a consideration to shifting resources toopen content/infrastructures.Oversee preservation and digitization services to assure long-termaccess to our collections.Oversee the management of physical and digital access to libraryresources, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience for allpatrons.Develop and implement policies and procedures related tocirculation, interlibrary loan, reserves, and other access services.Ensure library services are inclusive and accessible to all users.Research Services:
Develop a systematic approach to engagement with the Universitycommunity to raise the profile of the Library, inform strategies,and improve academic services.In partnership with the Dean and working through irect reports,cultivate partnerships with academic units to maximize the impact oflibrary services.Lead efforts to provide high-quality research support services,including reference assistance, information literacy instruction,and research consultation services.Oversee the design and delivery of innovative and engaging libraryprograms that foster information literacy and collaborate withacademic departments to integrate information literacy skills intothe curriculum.Partner with the Associate University Librarian for Digital Strategy& Services to develop the service portfolio for research data, openaccess, and other aspects of digital scholarship.Qualifications
Required:
Master of Library Science degree from an ALA-accredited institution (orcombination of a university degree and equivalent experience).
Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in anacademic or research library setting.
Experience with collection development and research services.
Demonstrated leadership ability, analytical skills, creative andinnovative problem-solving skills.
Strong knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in libraryservices.
