Job Summary
The El Paso County Department of Public Works is actively seeking a seasoned Surveyor III with the capability to seamlessly transition from fieldwork to project completions, demonstrating proficiency in the essential office-related/computer-based tasks integral to the role. The ideal candidate will be able to perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned, including retracing County Road rights-of-way, drafting records of survey, research into existing documents and monumentation for existing properties and/or supervising individual survey crews performing construction, boundary, or cadastral surveying. The chosen candidate for this position will also assume a leadership role, overseeing and providing professional guidance on all State and County requirements for our talented survey team within the Engineering Division.

This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday, 6:30am – 3:00pm, subject to change. Under FLSA guidelines, this position is non-exempt.
Serves as survey crew chief to ensure completion of engineering construction and land surveying assignments; performs complex calculations.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
Serves as survey crew chief; provides instruction and evaluates work to ensure safe, accurate, and timely completion of assignments in accordance with established surveying practices and procedures.
Organizes assignments, reviews legal descriptions, checks engineering plans, and chooses best instruments.
Conducts land surveys; locates or relocates land boundaries and corners; restores, rehabilitates, and preserves land survey monuments and benchmarks; determines land areas and elevations.
Conducts preliminary surveys; establishes horizontal and vertical control, cross-sectioning, topography, legal ties, and drainage data. Re-establishes sufficient horizontal and vertical control points to ensure convenient and accurate staking during construction; provides sufficient stakes of proper alignment and grade to allow the contractor to construct a job in accordance with plans; maintains field notes and enters field data into computer database.
Operates, adjusts, and calibrates survey instruments.
Maintains current licensing for GPS equipment; keeps all surveying software and firmware up to date.
Locates and identifies utility appurtenances, such as value boxes and manholes, topographic deviation, and features such as bodies of water, fences, trees, and other salient features.
Locates and identifies boundary monuments using maps and physical observation.
Sets up traffic control and signs at field survey locations.
Operates and runs a variety of surveying equipment, including GPS, electronic total station, level, and rod.
Reviews property boundaries and encumbrances provided in title reports and recorded documents.
Reviews field data processing and drawings.
Performs other duties as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Advanced knowledge of the principles and practices of public works construction and land surveying.
Advanced knowledge of and ability to accurately perform complex mathematical calculations including geometric, trigonometric, and algebraic functions.
Ability to lead a survey crew, provide direction, and objectively evaluate work.
Ability to effectively operate and provide instruction in the operation of all surveying equipment.
Ability to accurately perform complex mathematical calculations, including geometric, trigonometric, and algebraic functions.
Ability to provide and follow both verbal and written instructions.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with County staff, contractors, and the public.
Ability to operate a computer; proficiency with Excel, Word, Access, databases, and CAD software including Carlson survey or Civil 3D, and Trimble software.
Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
Required Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent education.
Education and/or experience to include mathematics with an emphasis in trigonometry and geometry.
Eight years of progressively responsible, professional surveying experience.
Any equivalent combination of related education and work experience that satisfy the requirements of the job will be considered.
Licenses/Certificates:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) License required.
Preferred Licenses/Certificates:
Colorado Professional Land Surveyor (COPLS) license Pre-Employment Requirements:
Must pass conditional post offer background investigation, motor vehicle record check, drug screen, and physical examination.Work Conditions
Duties are performed in an office environment and in the field. Position requires travel throughout El Paso County and negotiating uneven terrain and slopes. Field work requires exposure to weather elements, hazards, close proximity to moving vehicles and traffic, and other adverse physical and environmental conditions. Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 30 lbs. Subject to emergency off hours call-out.
